چکیده

Due to safety concerns and the risks associated with an islanded system, current legislation has prohibited the islanded operation of distributed generation. However, operation of a temporary island may be a useful support to the main supply. In particular, in the event of an upstream supply outage, the temporary islanding operation of distributed generator (DG) can provide local supplies to critical customers, thus reducing customers’ outage cost and improve the power system reliability. Despite all the benefits that an islanding operation can provide to the power system, there are still many challenges and technical issues regarding its implementation that constrain its operation. The aim of this work is to look into two main challenges associated with temporary islanding operation: frequency regulation and generator control. Several simulation based studies carried out using PSCAD/EMTDC are presented.

Impact of intentional islanding of distributed generation on electricity market prices

The battle for electricity customers in an increasingly competitive and deregulated market environment is one of the challenges facing the electric power utilities of today. Customers expect a reliable and efficient supply of power from their utilities. One of the advantages that a distributed generator (DG) can provide to the electric utility and to customers is the possibility of improving th...

Control of Grid-Connected and Intentional Islanding Operations of Photo Voltaic System

Existing control techniques for DG systems are designed to operate a system either in the connected or disconnected (islanding) mode to the utility; thus not allowing for both modes to be implemented and transitioned between. Existing detection and re-closure algorithms can also be improved upon. Dependent upon the method implemented, detection algorithms can either cause distortions in the out...

Risk of Unintentional Islanding in the Presence of Multiple Inverters or Mixed Generation Types

Generally, codes and standards require that distributed generators detect when they have been separated from the main grid, and cease to energize any part of the local electric power system in that case. Industry has responded by developing a variety of means for preventing unintentional islands, which are generally highly effective in cases with small numbers of inverters from a single manufac...

Inverter based distributed generator islanding detection method using U/O voltage relay

Islanded operation of distributed generators is a problem that can take place when they are connected to a distribution system. In this paper an islanding detection method is presented for inverter based distributed generation (DG) using under/over voltage relay. The method is an adaptive one and is based on the change of DG active power reference (Pref) in inverter control interface. The activ...

Islanding detection of synchronous distributed generators

This paper analyses the performance of local passive islanding detection methods for synchronous distributed generators, under different grid and load scenarios. These methods monitor electrical parameters at the interconnection point of a distributed generator and detect island situation whenever these parameters change correspondingly. Lately, islanding detection research has been focused on ...
